Context
The Hacienda Yucatán, originally built in the 19th century, was remodeled with a simplistic decorative touch featuring high ceilings and luminous white spaces. Surrounded by dense jungle, the site offers sweeping views that evoke a deep connection with nature.
Yucatán is renowned for its henequen haciendas, once thriving until the industry collapsed with the invention of plastic, leaving many estates abandoned. This project rescued one of those farms, transforming it into a serene weekend retreat while honoring its historical essence.
Design Principles
The remodeling prioritized user comfort and sustainability, employing regional materials to preserve the site’s heritage. Passive lighting and ventilation strategies minimized environmental impact while ensuring thermal comfort. The intervention introduced new functions to the old structures, carefully preserving original elements and combining them with contemporary uses.
With the hacienda set within 160 hectares of jungle, the design integrated a progressive environmental strategy to safeguard the natural surroundings over time. The result is a theatrical blend of historic grandeur and modern living comfort.
