Context
The hotel is located in Veracruz, Mexico's oldest and most historically significant port city on the Gulf Coast, where the maritime environment creates severe corrosion challenges that profoundly impact building materials, systems, and long-term maintenance. The combination of salt-laden air, high humidity, intense sun exposure, and periodic northern wind events creates one of the most demanding contexts for hospitality architecture, requiring design solutions that can maintain appearance and functionality despite accelerated deterioration.
The property had undergone continuous modifications over years of operation, resulting in accumulated inconsistencies and outdated systems that necessitated comprehensive restructuring and design uplift to meet contemporary hospitality standards and operational efficiency requirements.
Design Principles
The design process embedded high hospitality and maintenance requirements from inception, recognizing that coastal corrosion would test every material selection and detail. This proactive approach ensured that aesthetic decisions were always balanced against durability considerations, prioritizing solutions that could withstand the harsh port environment while maintaining the polished appearance essential to guest satisfaction. The design strategy integrated corrosion-resistant materials, protective finishes, and maintenance-friendly details throughout, transforming environmental challenges into design opportunities rather than compromising constraints.
The aesthetic vision draws on Veracruz's cultural connections to Cuba and Miami, creating a Caribbean-influenced coastal hospitality experience expressed through white open spaces, clean lines, and natural materials. This design language references the shared architectural traditions linking these port cities—their colonial histories, tropical modernism, and relaxed coastal sensibility—while maintaining contemporary clarity and sophistication. Front-of-house areas were redesigned to showcase the port's spectacular 360-degree views while providing protection from fierce northern winds that periodically sweep the Gulf Coast, balancing openness and transparency with necessary climate control and guest comfort. Complex back-of-house areas received equal attention, with adjustments ensuring optimal flows of work and service that enable staff to deliver seamless guest experiences efficiently, recognizing that visible hospitality quality depends fundamentally on invisible operational excellence.
